If you have a US criminal record, you will be flagged at immigration. However, it does not necessarily prevent from you entering. If you have a criminal record outside the US, it's inlikely you will be flagged at immigration as they are unlikely to have a record of you. It's likely to depend on the crime. Check with the embassy - it's pointless flying to the states without checking because if immigration won't let you in, you will be out back on the next available flight without the even having passed immigration (and the airline will charge you for the privilege as well).

As long as you have a valid address to stay at for the duration of your visit; better still, can be contactable: i.e: Mobile Phone or a sponsor: eg: friend or family member etc & of course common sense applies, if you run in to difficulties, you inform the appropriate authorities, like if in my case when I couldn't make my return flight!

Wouldn't it depend on the type of crime committed and whether they think you are likely to re offend? If its really petty what you committed it shouldn't be a problem but it depends on USA themselves they might be strict about it and you can't blame after all we hear is terrorist attacks happening to often.
