I highlight text and press backspace to delete them in Microsoft word. it doesnt work how do i turn this on?

Is there somewhere i have to go to turn this feature on. I highlight text and press backspace but what happens is the cursor move to the beginning of the highlighted region.

highlight then hit 'delete'.
