Check with the airline regarding what they require. Don't let them put the cat in the baggage area. Keep the cat with you and you may need to get a sedative tranquilizer from the vet beforehand for the cat.

if it will fit under seat--you can do it that way
if too big--checked in
either way--make sure to tell your travel agent to note your reservation...and it will cost you
