Diesel Pros:
Lower fuel consumption (more mpg, less frequent fill ups)
More torque at low revs - less need to rev the engine hard for decent acceleration, no need to change down a gear for motorway overtaking, lower noise levels at a high speed cruise.
Lower CO2 emissions
Diesel cons:
More noise/vibration at idle
More expensive to buy
Not as quick at full-bore acceleration (although much closer in many cases than they used to be)
Higher emissions of visible particulates.
Hybrid Pros:
Better fuel consumption in urban stop/go use - once you learn how to adapt your driving style to it.
Hybrid cons:
Very expensive to buy
No more economical than a normal petrol car on the motorway, so nowhere near as economical as a diesel in these conditions.
The best for you depends on where you drive, how much you drive, how you drive, and how adaptable your driving style is to a new powertrain.
Don't believe you will achieve the "official" fuel consumption figures - these are achieved under lab conditions on a rolling road, accelerating, slowing, braking etc. according to an EC directive. The rates of acceleration are very gentle so that even the most underpowered car can complete the test, so normal use of a higher powered car will involve much faster acceleration than the test procedure, hence higher consumption. Don't blame the manufacturers for this - they have no choice but to do what the EC tells them.

I have a diesel Toyota RAV-4 and I now will not have anything other than diesel. I get 47 mpg which most petrol cars of similar size (2 litre) cannot match and it is not noisy at all.
As a previous respondent also said, there are no spark plugs, so no damp starting problems which is ideal for here in the Highlands of Scotland.
Diesel currently 92.9p up here.
I had a petrol RAV-4 on hire on holiday and I am most glad that I chose the diesel version to have at home.

I purchased a diesel car at the end of May and have done 10,000 miles in it, my fuel costs have been about 20% cheaper than my petrol car before as I get better fuel economy. So if you do lots ofdriving definately go for a diesel car.

In truth, there is little advantage in the US to buy a diesel unless you are going to do some serious towing. A good, used Honda will save you more money in fuel and maintenance over any diesel sedan. A Hybrid is nothing more than a hippie feel-good band-aid car that is overweight, underpowered and looney-toons overpriced.

pros
More low down pulling power - much better if you tow or carry heavy loads. Also more flexible and less gear changing
better mpg and therefore longer range between fill ups
CO2 emissions are lower
diesel is much cheaper than petrol in france so worthwhile for continental holidays
(I have a diesel and it is perfect for french camping holidays for all the above reasons)
cons: diesel is more expensive in the UK
particulate emissions are higher
less top end power so if you like to rev to 6000rpm forget it

Usually diesels will outlast any regular gasoline car. Diesels are the only trucks that I have ever owned and never had a problem, and besides that there's no spark plugs to get wet when you go through the creeks!

My opinion is that there isnt any pros to buying a diesel car anymore. Years ago deisel fuel use to be cheaper but it isnt anymore. Have you thought about looking into the hybreds? Gas economy has to be the number one goal these days in buying cars. Diesel just isnt going to do it anymore.

you can use biodiesel...that's a plus. all cars suck though...they are ruining our environment. i would suggest getting a hybrid/electric car. good luck
i think bmw is making a car that runs off of hydrogen...if you have the money to pony up for one i'd suggest that.
