A friends dog has a bit of a cough. Her dog started coughing around the same time that some friends of ours got a cold from camping all weekend ( the dog was on the camping trip). I have heard that you can put Vicks Vapor rub on and inside the dogs mouth and around their nose to get rid of cold like systems. Does anyone know any truth to that rumor?

Let me start by clairifying, when I said camping, that didn't mean camp ground. We were camping at a friends house in his yard because he had a party for his daughter that weekend. Second the only other dogs that were there with her dogs were mine. Third I know that dogs can't catch viruses from people but we did have a fire all weekend and some things that shouldn't of been in the fire accidently was placed by the kids, which was handled. But I am assuming that it had something to do with the smoke because a few people got sick maybe the dogs could of too or the fact that it was damp all weekend and we were camping. No rain but damp. Dogs do get colds in damp weather if your dog is an inside dog 90% of the time.

Addition #2, it isn't trachea problems... the dogs run loose. They listen and they don't need to be on leashes. I have property they run where they want. Not trachea problems.

Yes this really works. Just take and put a gob of it on the end of the dogs nose and let him/her lick it off. Also if the dog is off its feed you can give him/her vanilla ice cream to keep its electrolytes up. Good luck.

A dog cannot catch a cold or cough from a human. If the dog is coughing, it can be any number of reasons from kennel cough to pneumonia to heartworms
Have your friend call the vet, and DO NOT USE VICKS.
NEVER give a dog a human medication without first consulting a veterinarian.. Many human medications can do severe harm or killl your your pet.

Under no circumstances would I put Vicks in your dogs mouth. My gosh, you will kill the poor dog. Bad advice...
Your dog may have a cold, or could have a irritated trachea if he was kept on a leash all weekend and pulled and pulled to be near people. My dog coughs every time I take her for a walk, finally I got her a halter to take her for walks now. She has a very sensitive trachea, and any slight touch or accidental bump to her trachea causes her to cough for days.
What does help is taking your dog to the vet, and getting some cough medicine. You give it to your dog by syringe. It helped my dog. Hopefully it will help yours.
I know you probably really love your dog, but Vicks is pretty potent, and I bet if you read the label, it will probably say, "Do not ingest." If it is not safe for humans to ingest, it wouldn't be for dogs either.

I have no idea if you can use Vick's vapor rub on a dog but it may have kennel cough. I would see my vet or at least call before applying anything.

No!!! Don't put vicks on the dog....unless you want to kill it!!! It sounds like the dog has kennel cough, maybe caught it from another dog around the campground. People don't give dogs cold and vice versa!!! Dog and people germs are not usually transferable...most viruses are species specific! (besides rabies)
Take the dog to the vet to get him diagnosed and possibly put on a round of antibiotics.

DO NOT USE VICKS on or near the dogs mouth/nose. Go to the Vicks website and read the warnings: http://www.vicks.com/products/vapor_rubointment.shtml#warnings
For external use only; avoid contact with eyes.
Do not use:
by mouth
with tight bandages
in nostrils
on wounds or damaged skin
In case of accidental ingestion, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center right away.
Failure to follow these warnings could result in serious consequences.

Coughing can actually be a sign of heartworms. Get the dog to the vet. Don't use vapor rub, it's toxic.

Redneck, don't put Vicks Vapour rub on the inside of the dogs mouth and around their nose. I don't think the dog has a cold. There are certain illnesses dogs can have that cause them to cough. Tell your friend to call her/his Vet. Please!

The dog may have a catchable virus called the kennel cough. Rumors won't help. Just take it to the vet. They'll tell you what to do.
