Daily or at the least once in two days, either in the evening from work or before leaving for work.
Weekly cleaning if household traffic is expected to be minimal with those blue things in the water trough. A brush scrub is a must and possibly descaler.

This afternoon before I left for work. After I cleaned it I poured in a cup of bleach, put the lid down and let it sit until I got home tonight.

I cleaned them all yesterday - and I do this often - at least 3 times/week for I have a 10 year old son, and know that he splashes a bit here and there.... it doesn't take that long anyhow..
