It's caused by light reflecting off the retinas of the subject. Humans have retina reflections that look red. Cats look green etc. The way to fix this is to use the red eye reduction feature of your camera where it will flash several times before the shot to cause the pupil to contract, preventing light from getting in there and reflecting off into the shot.
Also, the light has to bounce back at an angle that shoots directly into the lens to show up as red eye. In other words, red eye is often a function of the flash being too close to the lens so that the reflected light comes directly back into the lens. If you use an external flash, it is usually mounted much higher and/or off to the side at such an angle that the light does bounce back at an angle that can show up. This is why red eye is very common with small, compact cameras instead of larger cameras with a pop up flash that goes up high.

Avoiding it may be tough. Red eue comes from light reflecting off the retina. So if the subject is in a relatively dark location, the pupils are open wider. This allows more light to go in and hence more to come out - red!
some cameras shoot a burst of flashes that gets the pupils to reduce. This way the effect is reduced.
If your camera does not have an inbuilt red eye reduction, use a program to fix it.
Check out the free software from HP - HP Photosmart Essential.

it happens when you take a picture with flash.the retina did not adjust fast enough producing a red round in the retina. some camera provide red eye reduction which the flash shoot low intensity light several times before it shoot the full power light. If you use digital imaging there are some digital imaging software that could help you fix the red eye, you could try photoshop cs or cs2

It has something to do with the blood behind ur eyes... usually you get "red eye" when you use flash because your pupils open up more. Some cameras have a pre flash which works well or flashing a light in the persons eyes first should suffice. And if all else fails.... PHOTOSHOP it up (btw im a photographer:) happy shooting

I don't know why that happens exactly, but a good way to avoid it is to ask whoever you are taking a picture of to stare at a light first.
