The tomato juice wash works, but not instantly. It will take about 12 hours for the smell to go away. Here is the best de-skunk method;
Mix 1 quart of Hydrogen peroxide with 1/4 cup of baking soda and 1 tablespoon of liquid dish soap such as Dawn which is a good degreaser. Wash dog immediately with this mixture, leave it on the dog for at least 5 minutes or until the odor is gone, then rinse. If the dog was heavily saturated with skunk spray, then you may need to repeat the wash. Be kind to animals; if it is cold weather, be sure to thoroughly dry the animal before putting outside.
This really works.

I'm sorry to hear the bad news. I found this tip very useful.
Though you'll find sprays and rinses at pet stores for removing skunk stinks, you rarely have the luxury of running to the store when a skunk strikes. Battle the odor with this homemade remedy.
Steps:
1. Keep your dog outside if possible. It could take weeks to remove this noxious odor from your house.
2. Check her eyes. Skunk spray can irritate them. If they are red and irritated, add eye drops designed for humans or olive oil to her eyes to relieve the irritation.
3. Don rubber gloves and wash the dog thoroughly with dog shampoo. Rinse and dry her.
4. Douse her with tomato juice, which diminishes the stench. Use enough to soak the fur thoroughly. It might take several cans. Allow the tomato juice to soak in for 10 to 20 minutes.
5. Rinse out the tomato juice. Reapply it if the odor lingers.
I hope this helps you solving your problem. Best of luck to you and your dog!

Note: May cause discoloration but the color will come back.
The most common recipe for skunk-odor removal is a hydrogen peroxide/baking soda recipe:
`1 Quart of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide
`1/4 cup of Baking Soda
`1 teaspoon of Liquid Soap
`Wash while mixture is bubbling... rinse off with tap water.
The quantities described here are for a small Jack Russell. Scale up as necessary. Use FRESH Hydrogen Peroxide... H2O2 will eventually turn into water.
Good luck :)

I am a dog groomer. The tomato bath does work a little. but I would take your dog to the groomers. They have special skunk shampoo to take out the smell. BUT it wont take the smell out completely. Nothing will ever take the smell out completely. it will take time for the smell to go away, because the skunk spray is so strong it sticks to their skin and fur.

The tomato juice does not work. You just think it does because it overpowers your olfactory, but if someone else comes around, they will just smell skunk. The hydrogen peroxide-baking soda answer already given is the best at-home remedy. And very inexpensive. I tried it on my boxer....works great. And the skunk emptied on the poor fellow! Good luck! Oh!! And do this OUTDOORS!!!

Nature's Miracle has a Skunk spray.
You can get it @ any of the big chains.
OR take your pup to a Petco/Petsmart grooming center. (call before you go.) Depending on where you are in the country, it might run you about $35 - $40 to have him deskunked, compared to the $15.00 it would cost for the Nature's Miracle and doing it yourself.
They'll wash the pup until it's out. Why do it yourself and make yourself stinky? BLECH.

Bathe it in tomato juice to get rid of the smell. Then wash it again (with soap and water but mostly soap) to get rid of the tomato smell.

Although I never had that happen, a lot of neighbors have. They said that bathing them in tomato juice (I know, it sounds gross) takes the smell away, so I would think the mess would be worth it.
