You are not going to like this one..
Your friendship, honesty and support to the baby's parents and the baby when he grows up. Be there when the baby needs you. Say 10 years from now.
This is especially so since you were chosen to be the baby's godparent; human relationships are not of paper and plastic but with endearing qualities of listening, understanding and support.
Perhaps a well wishing card and bouquet of flowers would suffice for the time being.
If you feel you must get something the baby could use, always useful to enquire if the baby has any allergies before buying consumables. Toys are quickly out grown and money is a substitute of not knowing what to give, ie. shows you don't know the parents and the baby unless you know for a fact that the familly is really cash strapped, in which case a "fund" in the name of the baby resticted by convenants for the baby's benefit may be beneficial.

As a Godparent i think you should give somthing special that will be a keepsake for many years to come and also marks the year of the Baptisim. "2006 Royal mint Coin Collection" this will also increase in value.. I bought one a few years back when my nephew was baptized. Great gift idea and not to expensive at £14.99 Hope this helps :)

As a godparent I would think you would want to give something that was going to last. Something the baby will use or play with. Something the baby will look back on in later years and know it was you who gave that to them. I personally would probably give a stuffed animal AND a keepsake. Maybe something that would represent the child's birth date or something. I would purchase a set of proof coins from the US Mint. They have the date, all the coins of this year and they are encased AND will go up in value. it would be an investment in a way. But that's me. :)

You can get a little toy, just to give him a little something, along with a check. As a godparent, I would probably write a check or buy a treasury bond in the baby's name to be used toward his future expenses, like college. You could even open a custodian account for the baby, and use it to deposit $ for special occasions like baptisms, communions, birthdays, etc.

I'd aim for a cute outfit or a cute baby toy. Consider one of the 'baby genius' items- music, mobiles, etc. Include a gift receipt so they can exchange it easily- new parents tend to get a lot of stuff in one category, and need stuff in other categories.
Traditional baptismal gifts include Bibles (usually white, with child's name pressed on cover- impractical for a baby and non-returnable, but traditional- especially from a god-parent), rosaries or other religious jewelery, Baby Bible stories, wall cross, etc.
Other traditional god-parent things: starting some form of savings account in the child's name (god parents as co-signers) for college or to turn over at 18, etc. Savings bonds each birthday, etc. I especially like this for babies- a rather small investment on each major holiday can compund nicely by 18.

I think a gift voucher or some cash is good as the parents can choose what they want to buy. Or, to make it more meaningful, open an account for the money, put a little money there and put more every year on the anniversary of his/her baptism.

As a godparent, you are taking on a lifelong responsibility, and thus you probably should give something like a savings bond, and then something that is a keepsake - like an engraved silver baby cup, or a silver baby spoon. Good luck!

i think by being a godparent you are going to be assigned a very important post:)...money is definately impersonal..toy is nothing memorable.you can personalize some gift so that the baby will remember it even after he/she grows up.

give a keep sake or a toy, something that will last and commemorate the day...as a godparent you'll be giving gifts for many years to come.

I think a small gift for baby would be nice, and maybe a savings bond for the baby when he gets older. Something now, and something later.
