...their duty to the electorate and their duty to the Pope?
The Pope has called upon Canadian Catholic politicians to remember their duty to church doctrine and use the power of government to institute religiously-motivated bigotry against homosexuals and women who require abortions.
I say we never again elect a Catholic politician, as a sign of opposition to theocrats who think the world would be a better place if they pulled the strings of politicians rather than those who elect these politicians.
Never again will I vote for a Catholic politician, thanks to Benedict's interference.

As the accusation of bigotry (as opposed to refusing to elect people who face conflicts of interest) has been made, I put this to a vote.

But then there's no representation of Catholics, then, and you're effectively denying them the ability to be elected, aren't you?
You have the right to disagree with Benedict. So do elected Catholics. But it seems excessive to go to the point of marginalizing a portion of the electorate.
But I'm just an American Catholic, what do I know? ;-)

As a citizen of the United States, I assumed Canadians also had the freedom of religion. From your comments, I see that my assumption was incorrect. You are trying to replace your bigotry for the alleged bigotry of the Catholic Church.
Every political candidate should (and does) use their moral beliefs during the exercise of their position whether they are Catholic or not.
The Catholic Church does not want theocracies. But any democratic nation should reflect the morality of the majority of its citizens in its laws. This is how democracy works.
+ Homosexuality +
The Catholic Church believes there is nothing sinful about being homosexual. But homosexuals like all unmarried people are called to celibacy.
The Church specifically says that homosexuals "must be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity. Every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided."
+ Pro-Life+
How many women "require" abortions?
The Catholic Church is not just against abortion, it is pro-life in the widest sense. This is often called a "Consistent Ethic of Life."
This pro-life stance stresses the highest regard for dignity of human life including that of:
- All people in objecting to unjust war and nuclear arms.
- The unborn in objecting to to abortion, in fitro fertilization, frozen embryos, embryonic stem cell research, and cloning
- The elderly, sick and dying in objecting to assisted suicide and euthanasia
- Prisoners in objecting to the death penalty
- The poor and minorities in supporting social justice issues.
With love in Christ.

I don't believe that there is one politician that will not do his task towards Canada before the doctrine of the pope.
Simply look here, the bible says : 'they shall not kill' and in many wars the Canadians did their duty towards their country. The time of the popes dogma's are longtime gone.
