Take him/her to the vet he might have a cut in between his toes and or something is wrong with his leg. Make sure he is walking on it. If not and he is limping something is definately wrong. I would have him/her checked out before it gets worse. GOOD LUCK!

lifting up which foot?? Is he "hiking" like he is going to go to the bathroom?? Or is it his front foot?? Is he "pointing"??

If he is hiking and is not outside, get a small spray bottle and spray him with WATER ( not other solutions) This will get his attention.

If he is pointing this may be a natural thing he is doing as a part of his breed. Leave it alone, it is natural for him to do this.

If he is limping, not putting weight on that one foot take him to the vet and get it checked out.

Below is a picture of a dog "pointing"

What leg? Did you check for a thorn? That would be my first guess.Otherwise he could of hurt his leg.Back legs are usually the most injured due to strained ligament or muscle.I would not let him run for a couple of days and if not better call the vet. They have medication called Rymidal for a short period of time will help heal him. I have brought my dog to my chiropractor also. It worked...really!! Good Luck!!

It could be any number of things:

Splinter,
Torn or thin Pad on his paw
He could have hurt his leg, ankle, etc.

See if there is any specific part that hurts him by pressing gently, like the vets do.
In any case, if it continues for a day or so I'd take him to the vet so they can give you a more professional answer than Yahoo! Answers.

If it doesn't go away on it's own, take him/her to the vet.

Is it a neutered male? If not, first neuter him. Then get a good cleaning solution to remove the odors.
