After experiencing a rather nasty nervous breakdown I was perscribed Zoloft. I was at first not too keen on the idea since so many in our family and culture tend to see such things as therapy and medication as a sign of stupidity or insanity.
The doctors did inform me that it would more than likely take two weeks or so to fully be absorbed into my body at the appropriate levels. Within the first dose I felt so incredibly relieved of so much of my stress I called my doctor and asked if that was normal.
For me, Zoloft helped me to think more clearly, to better itemize my problems or worries and to deal with them in order of importance. Zoloft did not change my personality, but helped guide me to where I was before I went well beyond simple stressing out.

Zoloft is well tolerated and effective for the treatment of depression and certain types of anxiety disorders.
Zoloft is FDA approved to treat depression, social anxiety disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) in adults over age 18. It is also approved for OCD in children and adolescents age 6-17 years.
It belongs to a class of drugs known as SSRI's (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors). Zoloft works to correct a chemical imbalance in the brain which may be related to symptoms of depression or anxiety.
Some people taking Zoloft might have some side effects. The most common Zoloft side effects are dry mouth, insomnia, sexual side effects, diarrhea, nausea, and sleepiness. Not everyone gets side effects.
Studies show that Zoloft is not associated with weight gain, so you shouldn't gain weight because of Zoloft.
Taking Zoloft won't change who you are as a person, so I would out of personal experience recommend it.
I believe you have to give it about 3 weeks to feel all the effects, so be patient.
If it doesn't work for you, don't be afraid to ask your doctor for a different Anti-Depressent, like Prozac, Lexapro, Wellbutrin etc.

I was on Zoloft for a short time, but it didn't work for me. I took other antidepressants that were similar to Zoloft and found the side effects were not worth the effort. I had weight gain, fatigue, I felt like a frickin' zombie and zero libido. I actually felt emotionally worse on the medicine than off.
But those were MY experiences...everyone is different.

I took Zoloft for two days in 1993. The reason it was two days is it was new and my psychiatrist had some samples, and gave them to me (prescribed) - I was also on Lithium at the time. I do not recall how I felt, but the first night I did not sleep a wink - felt okay during the day. The second night I did not sleep a wink and I called my psychiatrist and told him I was not sleeping on this meds and he took me off of them - acted kinda disappointed at session. Couple months later I took myself off of lithium and doing okay I guess - still have my ups and downs - they are not extreme, however...

I was so afraid that I would be unable to cry, or to feel sad, if I took an antidepressant. I can now say that I'm very grateful that they exist. No, they are not easy to get off of, but it is possible, so please don't let that stop you from getting help if you need it.
I was raped, and wanted to be able to cry, but also to leave my house, love my children, and move forward step by step. I did those things, not the drug, but whatever small boost I got from the drug was needed, and appreciated

It was hellish to get on and not all that bad to get off of but you have to be very determined to get off of it. Being on it was good, a lot of weight gain, but it works. It just takes a while to get in your system and that can be very hard for some people. Hope it works for you!
