For one thing, if you can taste your vodka, you aren't drinking the good stuff anyway. The better the vodka, the less color, odor, and taste you will have. Then you have to take into consideration how the two are made. Vodka is a distilled liquor which is why you want it to be colorless, odorless, and tasteless. This is indicative of it's purity. It can be distilled from grains ( Grey Goose, Absolut, all that cheap crap you get in well drinks, Belvedere, etc. ) or it can still be made from fermented potatoes (Chopin and a very few others are still made this way ). Rum is made from fermented molasses and or sugar cane. Rum is, therefore, more sugary and will more than likely absorb quicker and easier when you consume it. Again, it will depend a bit on the quality of the rum you are consuming. There are many fine rums out there. Most, if not all, are of Caribbean origin.
Try a better vodka and see if you don't find the flavor more palatable.

rum has more sugar in it, so the sugar somewhat masks the alcohol. mmmm mojitos...
Also, good vodka should never taste like alcohol. It's the cheap grocery-store kind that smells and tastes like rubbing alcohol. The real stuff is very smooth.

rum is made from molasses or cane sugar. and vodka is made from potatoes. so the overall taste of rum is sweeter than vodka so it is less overpowering. and you shouldnt taste good vodka if you can taste more than the slight hint of alcohol at first you need to upgrade to the real stuff.

Maybe because vodka comes from Russians and rum comes from the Carribean. It needs to taste stronger to keep you warm when you're next to Siberia and Alaska.
