tascam Dp-01. we sell them here where i work for $299. i have the great big one (the 2488, with 24 tracks).

they're super easy to use, and if you get a few good condenser mics and use a "triangular Mic" recording technique, you can get a pretty good sound fairly easily.

I play bass and have been recording on a cheapo VHS recorder for years now. The sound quality is good and you can get HRS.and HRs. on long play tapes. Get one with the audio/video jacks and just don't use the video side. I record directly from my amp head but I can't see why you can't buy a compatible mike and do the same thing.
