I have been carrying this flame for a girl, my first real girlfriend in high school for 20 years and recently found out she didn't really feel the same way about me as I did about her. I sought her out, tried many ways to find out how she was and what she was up to so to be able to say hello and that I still thought of her everyday. Sounds like an obession but she really changed my life. I was prepared for the fact that she had moved on, married, kids but wasn't ready to be told that I was not that important in her life. In life people leave their personal tattoos with you so that their passage in your life marks you. It is true some come and some go but there are those who always stay with you and this girl was one of a few that have marked my life.

If you love anyone you should expect heartache. It is the flip side of the joy that loving gives you. Even the happiest couple is nearly doomed to pain, one usually dies first and leaves the other alone. Try to see your heartache not as a burden or curse, but as one looks at scar tissue. It is usually bigger and stronger after the wound has mended. I think it was David Ben-Gurion, the first prime minister of Israel who said, "He who loves much will suffer much." Put this girl away in that secret place in your heart, treat the memory of her as your own private treasure and don't be afraid to smile inwardly because of it.

It's a shame that she couldn't see how much she had influenced your life. Or it could be that she was just embarrassed to be told this...Take heart that time heals all wounds...
