"Mystics are, to express it briefly and somewhat crudely, thinkers who cannot detach themselves from images, therefore not thinkers at all. They are secret artists: poets without verse, painters without brushes, musicians without sound. There are highly gifted, noble minds among them, but they are all without exception unhappy men." [Hermann Hesse]

You Christians don't offer any real advice, you just runaway from your problems.

A mystic is someone who wants to change the world but can't. That's what Hesse meant.

I can't think of a single mystic who would want to be "cured" of their "ailment". And most mystics are profoundly happy people. But they are a different type of thinker (and if you don't believe they're capable of higher thought, please read some of their works, particularly those of the historical Roman Catholic mystics). Because of the subjective nature of mysticism, the mystic has certainly brought about transformation in one world, if no other: their own. Mysticism involves a different way of being informed about the world, and a different comprehension of its mysteries. However, one either believes in mysticism or not. So feel free to walk away from the concept altogether, but to criticize it with sweeping generalities and a handful of quotes seems a poor substitute for actually researching the phenomenon and learning about it.

I would love to be Robin Hood.. you know, grab a bow and arrow to rob the rich and give to the poor? But I would probably shoot my own rear end with the first arrow, so therefore I can't be him. Is that mystic?

i think that Mr Hesse, needs to have a clue as to what and to whom he is writeing about.

Mystics, are generaly very happy people that do not worry about the outside world and it's problems.

Don't bother curing it. Just drop the theoretical aspect and make it practical.
