No. This is an urban legend.
"A dog's mouth contains a lot of bacteria," notes Dr. Gary "Ask the Vet" Clemons. "Remember, a dog's tongue is not only his wash cloth but also his toilet paper."
So, where did the notion that a dog's mouth is cleaner than a human's come from? Doctors, evidently. It has long been noted in the medical literature that human bites are more likely to become infected than those of other mammals, including dogs. Statistics to that effect were published in journals and repeated by medical professionals, and folk wisdom took off from there.

I JUST read an article about this online this morning. It said that this is an urban myth...they do have more bacteria in their mouths than ours, and many dogs eat some things that make it worse (like dogs that eat poop). BUT, is says that most of the bacteria they have is not likely to be able to tranfer to humans, since the bacteria is species specific. They said you are more likely to pick up something harmful from kissing another person, then "kissing" your dog.

Being specific .. yes Dogs mouth are cleaner than ours, ( Hw many dogs do u see visiting a dentist ! )
But the fact is that even if it is cleaner than ours, dont think that, humans won't be infected, their saliva n skin contains bacteria n stuff which is alein to our body ( thats why grandma used to say wash ur hands n mouth with soap after playin with the pet )
So play with ur pet freely but wash ur hands n face to be on the safer side.

Not exactly. Their saliva is species specific so there germs won't affect us as much. This myth was started bc people saw dogs lick at thier would to clear dead tissue which helped the wounds heal faster so people once though dog spit was healthy. Kinda gross, huh?
