I don't want to get arrested, but I had friends that got their pockets picked in Rome, and they said it's also a very frequent crime in Paris.

The answers so far are all correct.

- You can check it in your luggage
- Customs may find it and want to talk to you
- It may be illegal in France

But above all else, spraying someone because they picked your pocket is not somthing that the police look favorably upon in any country - especially one where you are not a citizen.

Don't put stuff in your pockets and if you must - put it in your front pocket. I have sepent a lot of time in these places and have never had my pockets picked - More often people leave thier purse or bags un watched.

Pepper spray is a great self defense tool, but I think it's not hat you need for this particullar event.

I don't know the exact answer, but pepper spray is considered an offensive weapon in many European countries, which can mean it is banned entirely or you might need a license for it. Whatever happens you won't be able to take it in hand luggage on the plane.

Don't be so paranoid, if you get pickpocketed you get pickpocketed. And anyway, the idea with pickpockets is that they do it without you noticing, so your pepper spray would be useless anyway.

You can take it in your checked baggage, as long as it has a mechanism to prevent accidental discharge. You should check to see if it's legal to carry in France.

Also, if your cannister shows up on the luggage screening process, they'll probably open up your bag.

Of course, the obvious answer is don't put anything in your pockets.

I wouldn't try it.I have been to Paris many time and i never felt unsafe. STAY IN SAFE AREA just like you do at home.Don't hang out by yourself at 2 am in a bad part of town.
