My cousin is incarcerated and I write frequently to him. I'm not sure what to ask him, because I don't want to depress him or make him feel like I'm putting him down. I want to avoid the self help kind of converstions...Any ideas???

Ask him: "When will you be set free?"
This kind of questions make him think about the bright future, not the black present time.
Or "What will you do when you get out of prison?"
Or "Well, I think you are now more-experienced in life, aren't you?"
Or "What kinds of things, you want me to bring for you, after getting back home?"
What I am trying to say is: Let him imagin time of being set free, let him dream about the time after this stage, do not make him feel as a depressed man, in case you want him to be open-minded then talk to him as if he is in a vacation, tell him about new things happened to you, do not about his daily life.
because the answer would be "OK ! I AM FINE ! JUST LEAVE ME ALONE!"

Let him know how people he can't reach are doing and ask if he needs anything that you'd be able to buy for him (ie..magazines,books etc..). He just needs to know that someone on the outside still has love for him and not everybody thinks badly of him..good luck

Gee. that's a tough one...
Just let the person know you care and tell him about your life.
This way, he can think of questions to ask you and you will get some perspective on what to ask in your next letter.

ask him if he needs more 'soap on a rope'. with soap on a rope you just wear it around your neck and never have to worry about that awkward moment when you bend over in the shower to pick up your soap and some other convict thinks you're making a pass at him.

Ask him advice about your life. It will make him feel important, and worthwhile as a human being. Tell him your problems and ask his opinion

Ask him about how he is doing emotionally. Ask him if prison is just like in the movies or like in American me. Works like a charm trust me. He'll laugh and be like "This fool..." and he'll open up.

Just tell him what's going on in your life and the families lives. Tell him that you miss him and that you're thinking of him.
