I was wondering if there are any "back doors" or secrets to getting discount travel or airfare. I am a member of several different sites/clubs that I get updates on discount cruises, vacations, etc, but airfare is much harder to find. Thoughts? Thanks!

No, basically. Airline staff generally pay 10% of the normal fare, travel agents pay 25% of certain fares. It is a total myth that somehow there is a secret supply of virtually nothing air fares. There are cheap fares around and the way to use them is by planning a long way ahead and travelling off peak. But if you want to go somewhere 3 days before Christmas - it will cost.

If your dates are flexible and you don't care where you go, sign up for each of the airline's "sale" newsletters which usually come out on Thursday and have major discounts on undersold flights for that Saturday-Monday. I just booked DC to NYC for $90 r/t. And if you're just looking for something to do and not too particular about what, flying out early Saturday morning and back late Sunday night or early Monday makes an awesome weekend. But if you're more looking for specific destinations and booking in advance, you're pretty much out of luck. The days of free airfare are long gone.

Personally I'd recommend picking one airline and sticking with them; don't save your miles for free tickets because they're getting harder and harder to actually earn. Cash your miles in on upgrades to first class. I would much rather pay coach fare and go first class than pay nothing (or point redemption fees) and go coach!

If you work for an airline, they have great benefits. Depending on the company and the position, you can either get totally free or deeply discounted flights! You also get discounts on hotels, cruises, rental cars, etc.

You could become a 'courier' - they travel with hand luggage only and take important documents etc from country to country of course you have no say in where you are going
