If the litter is more than 5, for a large breed, or 3, for a small breed, I feed the largest puppies 3 times per day, while the rest of the litter nurses..this keeps the big ones from hogging all the mom's milk, and leaves more for the smaller ones..and produces a much nicer litter..
If the puppies are crying too much, then I will supplement the entire litter, as needed.

Wow, what a crappy breeder. I just hate to hear stories like this one. Stay with the medicine that the vet gave you. Coccidiosis is a "filth" disease another indication of a bad breeder. In the meantime, cook some white rice, allow to cool. Cook some hamburger, drain. Scramble some eggs into the hamburger. Allow mixture to cool. Mix rice (60%) with the hamburger mixture (40%), feed to pup every 4 hours. This can be run through blender to make a paste. Keep mixture in frig. Only taking out a bit at a time. Warm for pup, make sure it isn't too hot. Pup will eat this. After worming and coccidia treatment is over, you can start adding in puppy food slowly to mixture. Worm this pup every 2 weeks until 16 weeks old. Use Pyrantel Pamoate suspension @ 1 ml to every 10 lbs of pup. Never use less than 1/2 ml. Keep a close eye on this pup. He has had a very bad start in life.

Yes. Sometimes it's necessary for a large litter. I've been sent pictures of inter-species nursing--dog nursing squirrel, animals in the wild like chimps, etc. Considerations: is dog gaining weight at the right pace; what is in the bottle - does it have the nutrients needed for a young pup. Is mother's milk insufficient, or is she rejecting her pups,

You can, but the mother's milk is best. If she only has 3 pups, she should have plenty of milk. Make sure you are feeding her puppy food, and you can supplement her with cottage cheese, yogurtm eggs. Not all at one time....lol

If the nourishment that the puppies are recieving is not enough and the vet directs you to do so by all means bottle feed them but if it is just that you want to bottle feed the puppies let the mom do the job.

Yes you can if you are using a special dog replacement milk, but why would you want to? unless theres more pups than mom can really cope with and they are loosing weight they will be better off with moms milk.

Why would you want to? If the mother is nursing the pups, then that is what is best for them. Her milk contains antibioties that protect the pups from diseases.
