Good question, see how this lady thought she knew Islam because she was a wife of a Muslim but she refused to adopt Islam, it is after many years when she had the opportunity to do a sincere search she discovered the truth and became a supporter of it:

Cassius Clay converted to Islam and changed his name to Muhammed Ali so he wouldn't get drafted into the army and get sent to Vietnam. Others have other reasons. You left out Cat Stevens- who now has some other name.
My opinion is that all of our religions are only partially true and many people have been attracted to Islam because they find pieces of truth that they didn't find in their native religions. Biblically, Jews and Christians are commanded to remain in a constant state of prayer; to never cut off the communication with God. The actual practice in some Christian sects doesn't include that much prayer, so some people are drawn to the Muslim practice of praying five times a day every day.
Which is still not the constant state of prayer that could bring a person much closer to God, but it's an improvement over praying once a week.
Some people-especially people of African descent- are attracted to Islam by the opportunity to get out of mainstream American religion which is generally a lot of talk and not much practice. I think Muslim dietary laws also appeal to many people.
So between being a practice-based religion, having some very specific laws, being out of the American mainstream and being a very widespread faith in west Africa, Islam has some major selling points.
That doesn't mean that every claim that everyone makes about it is always correct. In any religion, we are all still responsible for our choices and our actions. Any person of any faith could still be nice or mean.
Mean people just get more media coverage than nice people do.
I have my own religion called Nice People Who Love God. It has a lot of members, but most them aren't formal subscibers. Oh well. Gotta start somewhere.

Realizing the light of truth. Islam is not bad. What do you mean by Islam is illegal? Anyway, Whoever says that are plain bigots and also ignorant.
Unlike any other religion, Islam is the most complete and most established religion. When someone tries to decypher this truth, Allah helps him/her realize the essence of Islam.

Isalm is good. the islamists are what is bad. just as Christianity is good, but the Christians are bad. this is what humans do with wise spiritual teachings. They warp and pervert it. Mohammed and Jesus are probaly friends in heaven playing checkers and wondering where they went wrong on earth with these fools they tried to instruct and save.

That doesn't mean they were right... I could list several famous people that have committed a crime and gone to prison for it. Would that make their crime a good idea for others to follow?

beside these few famous there are lot of other people converting to Islam, including one my friend's wife (she was christian) she converted to islam after hearing lot of things against islam. she found the truth !! now she is muslim.
