IF you're on about the Mark 3 MR2 which is the MR2 Roadster in the UK(or spyder if your american, or MRS if you're from somewhere else) then the convertable roof is not electric. However it takes a few seconds to put up and down.

The advantage of a non electric roof is weight savings, canvas weighs much less than metal and motors and gears etc. Disadvantage is that its much easier to slash/break into although it is alarmed/imobalised anyway and EVERYTHING in the front ot the car is lockable, including the fuel cover (can lock from inside the car)

No, the older models had optional removable glass panels and the new ones have manual folding roofs.
