In this question: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/?qid=20060917110738AAP3GTC&r=w&pa=FZptHWf.BGRX3OFMhDxQUUUSltt_MVmaYtZB7QJb6ViW1WZrPA--#NbUvWjK6VzL6imkocwnA Mobjob stated that Protestants don't believe that Mary was a virgin. Most Protestant churches believe Mary was a virgin when she conceived Christ, and that Joseph, her husband, did not know her physcally during her pregnancy, but they did have sex after Mary was 'clean' and together had children.
Not really a question, but wanted to refute Mobjob and he doesn't have a way to contact.

Lafang - I think your mixing up your Mary's.
Mary Magdelene was thought to be a prostitute (oh and there is nothing in the bible that says she was)
Mary (the mother of Christ) was a young maiden who became pregnant through the Holy Spirit and gave birth to Jesus
Please go back and reread the accounts (also know that Joseph was going to divorce her - back then an engagement was as legal as marraige, you just didn't get to be together for a year.

Yes she was a virgin, bible says so. Protestants do believe she was a virgin. We just do not glorify her as catholics do, she was just a human that was chosen by God. I cant find anywhere in the bible that tells us to glorify her. Luke 1:27,31,32 ...The virgin's name was Mary...you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest ...
Joseph did not know her physically, bible says in matthew, yes they had children in their marriage. Jesus had brothers,Mark 6 James, Joseph,Judas and Simon, also says,Aren't his sisters here with us?"

Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a Virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. (Isaiah 7:14)
Unfortunately, this is all a misunderstanding. The term "virgin" appears in the Greek translation (the Septuagint), but that is not correct. The original Hebrew word, ha-almah, really just means "young woman." The word has no meaning beyond what we find in English with "young woman" or "maid," but it was translated into Greek with the word parthenos, which means virgin.
The Hebrew word for that, if that is what the author had meant to say, would have been bethulah. The phrase in which it appears, ha-alma hara, means "the young woman is pregnant." It is worth noting here that this phrase is in the present tense, not the future tense - rendering it an unlikely prophecy.

Protestants DO believe in the Virgin conception/birth of Jesus Christ. Whoever said we don't, is wrong.
We just believe that after Jesus' birth (and the 40 day period of cleansing that followed) Joseph and Mary enjoyed a regular married life. Other children are not out of the question, either.
Peace.

Good question, Vicki!
I am Catholic and my husband is Protestant. We believe that Mary was Eternal Virgin, whereas they believe that though she was a Virgin when she concieved and gave birth to Jesus, she went on to have other children (with her husband, Joseph), and therefore was not an Eternal Virgin. I believe that is what Mobjob meant by his answer (my husband answers the question the same way Mobjob did).

She was knocked-up by a Roman soldier.
C'mon - if a woman gave birth and claimed to be a virgin, would you believe her. In all of history, I doubt any husband (or anyone) would believe that.
How about this? If God did not need to use a womb for Adam and Eve, why did have to with Jesus? And, how did he know Joseph wouldn't beat Mary to death or have her stoned?
Why was that a big deal anyway?
Sounds very Catholic to me - they are the only ones that say if you are intimate with a woman you become less close to God.
Why would any woman be a Catholic when they make it clear that you are unclean and less worthy than a man.
Why won't God let a woman be Pope - or, Popette.
How come the Catholic God has a problem with sex between and man and woman, but not between a Priest and a child?
Just one more.
Why is it the alleged most powerful force/being over all of space and time can only manifest his presence on half-eaten grilled cheese sandwiches, dirty windows on broken down warehouses in Chicago, and tortillas all over Central America?

think about this, if you tell a lie and get found out what better way of getting around the holy law at that time, by saying he had never had sex with Mary, the prostitute, so it must have been gods divine intervention, a miracle. then that miracle of all the known universe ends up a carpenter!!.
if he had admitted that they had sex ,he would have been stoned or flogged or whatever, same for Mary.
human nature has not changed that much, survival is paramount he would have said he was visited by bloody aliens if he had thought of it.

In the bible, any version, it states clearly that a midwife who delivered Jesus confirmed, Mary WAS a virgin when she birthed Jesus Christ.
