Not even close. People died horrible deaths for their faith. Ask anyone today if they would go through that for the LORD. Some, however, may die like they did back then.

The basic faith remains the same, but many customs have changed. There has been much disagreement within the church, also, on certain points of Christian Living, which has ultimately led to certain divisions (Catholic, Protestant, etc.)

The political situation in various parts of the world either stimulates the expression of Christian faith, or smothers it. Persecution still goes on, especially in Theocratic countries whose basis is NOT Christianity. I think there is less persecution today than there once was, but that could be my mistake: I live where there is no real persecution.

Well, there was no Protestant church then, so that's a big one--only the Holy Roman church, as it was called then. Most people weren't literate and only the clergy read scriptures. Quite different, really.
