A catholic looks to God, through the help of a priest (confession), for the forgiveness of sins.

A protestant looks to God, through direct prayer, for the forgiveness of sins ("Forgive us our sins...")

A protestant protested the need for the Church (priests, Pope, etc) to be contolling in the ability to connect with God.

There are protestants that DO pray or recongize saints (episcopalians), believe in purgatory, etc...Methodists & Epicopalians baptize infants...others do not....it depends on the specific sect....and they're are MANY of them.

Short answer is that Protestants are by definition Christians who are not Catholic. They "protested" against the Catholic church for various reasons. They left the Catholic church but remained Christians. So obviously Protestants do not accept the authority of the Pope. And they take exception to many of the rules developed by the Catholic church over the past 2,000 years.

Comprehensive and short don't go together here, but I can try...

Catholic: The original church, started by the Roman emperor Constantine in, I think, the year 313. Pope is the authority, Mary intercedes with God, saints and guardian angels are prayed to, transubstantiation (the beliefe that communion becomes the actual blood and flesh of Jesus), sins are confessed to a priest.

Protestant: Started by Martin Luther in, I think, 1500's. No mortal authority. Only Jesus intercedes with God, none besides the Trinity are prayed to, communion is usually seen as symbolic, sins are confessed only to God.

Wow! I cannot believe the misnomers in peoples answers.
While I can't really speak to the Catholics, I can tell you that Protestants believe that there is nothing between us and Jesus, except what we put between us.
We pray directly to God, we don't need a priest or a saint to intercede for us, because we have the Holy Spirit dwelling within us.
We are to try and live our lives for God, and pray unceasingly. We do not believe Mary (mom of Jesus) was anything more that a wonderful woman who stepped out on faith and lived in obediance to God. While we admire her faith, we do not raise her up any further than that.

The Catholic church takes it's authority from the Apostle Paul. The Pope is their spokesman for God. Most other Christian churches were founded by dissenters who disagreed with some of the doctrine of the Catholic church. Most wanted the Bible in the hands and the language of the lay person. They established councils to direct the church and define the doctrines.

A few basic differences.
* Catholics believe in purgatory (a sort of place between heaven and earth).
* Catholics pray to the saints Protestant do not.
* Catholic priests are not allowed to marry. Protestant pastors/ministers are

There are more, but these are some of the most noticeable.

The difference has to do in the sacraments...things such as baptism, the Lord's supper, confession....things like that. Much of the protestant belief is that some particular sacraments we don't necessarily need to observe in the way that the catholics observe them. For instance, catholics baptize their children when they are babies due to the fact that they believe they need to be. Protestants believe that it is about adult baptism and a conversion process. Also protestants believe that they have room to interpret the bible themselves and catholics rely on a priest to do it for them.

I was always told that in a broad sense protestant meant non-catholic. Any denomination except catholic.

And remember the word "Christian" means "Christ-like".

Christian is the main umbrella religion that believes that Jesus was the messiah. Catholicism is a branch of Christianity that follows a certain set of rules from the Bible differentiating it from other branches that follow different rules from the same book.
Joshua: Christianity def. = the religion based on the person and teachings of Jesus Christ.

Catholicism is the "Largest denomination of Christianity, with more than one billion members."

Thus Christianity IS the umbrella faith and catholicism IS a faction of that faith

Catholics like having priests and saints and statues and other intermediaries between them and god. They also use money a lot to get around things like being forgiven. So the protestants broke away and said we will communicate directly with god, thank you. And we don't need to pay money to help us do it.
