He is telling Peter that satan must have placed that idea in his head. He knows what he must do and this is just one more of Satans temptations. Satan would have loved it if Jesus had decided to not give himself to the will of God. What a victory for him that would have been.

Jesus was predicting his death to his disciples at that time. Peter told him, " Never, Lord! This shall never happen to you"
Jesus turned and said to Peter, " Get behind me, satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men." ( NIV)

At that time the disciples still did not fully understand what was going to happen to Jesus. They did not understand that that is what Jesus had come to earth for. The verses themselves are self explanatory.
Maybe this version from the bible " The message" will make it more clear to you

Peter took Jesus by the hand protesting " Impossible, Master! That can never be!"
But Jesus didn't swerve. " Peter, get out of my way. Satan get lost. You have no idea how God works."

That interpretation makes it a little more clear.

Nora has it right.

Because peter told him that it was not so that he would be captured and tortured and Jesus new that it was the Fathers will that this take place. That is why Jesus said satan get behind me? If Adam had did that in the Garden of Eden we all we be OK . God made man perfect and man found a way to kill themselves.

It means that at that moment Peter was not speaking in harmony with God's thoughts, so he must have been influenced by Satan's thinking instead. We know that Satan was trying to tempt Jesus to break his integrity to God. I do not know if he could actually see Satan or sense his presence at that time but he knew that Satan would rejoice in believing he might wish to spare his own life at the expense of God's plans.

Matthew 16:23  But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men.

Peter was offering to protect HIM from death when HIS time was to come. JESUS rebuked him by making that statement. HIS death HAD to come for our sake.

Jesus was saying: Don't tempt or miss-advise me. That's Satan's job.
