I've read the Apaches ate captured horses. They could run fast. Tough Indian nation. They started in Texas and migrated west. Never defeated by the US Army. You'll find them today in Arizona and New Mexico.

On foot and later by horseback. They had no horses until the Spanish brought them. There are stil wild horses living in New Mexico that are descended from those original first Spanish horses.
