I want to buy Johnny Walker Black Scotch at O'Hare Airport Duty free shop (in American, United or International Terminals) and pick it up at my destination airport in Europe. Can Americans leaving the country do this? How much can you purchase for personal use?

I want to avoid shipping the scotch in my suitcase, as it may leak. I think no liquids are allowed for carry-on.

No, you have to purchase it and take it with you. They don't hold or special ship goods that people shop there. Besides you can put it in your registred luggage, liquids prohibition aplly only to the cabin of the plane. Trust me It will not spill.

Check with your airline; most of the carriers let you shop duty-free during your flight. You fill out a form with what you'd like to purchase and it'll be waiting for you at the destination; usually you have to go to the baggage claim office to get it. By the way, the duty-free shops are almost always within the "sterile" zone after you pass security so you could not purchase the scotch and pack it in your bags; your bags are already checked with the airline by the time you get to the duty-free shop. And you are correct, no liquids in carry-ons.

If you buy something in the duty free store, they will have it waiting for you at the gate and you'll be able to pick it up on your way into the plane. When you buy the products, you will receive a claim check and that same number is also on your bag. I just flew overseas and bought some perfume at duty free, and didn't have any problems.

They will not let you bring any liquids through the security checkpoint, but anything you buy in duty free, is allowed since it's sealed. Hope this helps.
