The short version is yes you can. BUT know this; The Mexican gov't does not view protesting in the same manner as the USA. We believe everyone has a right to freedom of expression, regardless the topic, while the Mexican govt does not see it that way.
As for being attacked, absolutely! If not by the local citizenry on the spot, you could be arrested by the police and then get beaten up!
This is just one reason on a very long list of reasons exactly why I love the USA!

Is mexican independence, september 16.
You can go in july fourth and march, thay had already donde it this year in mexico city.
In mexico they view protestants almost the same as in USA. A group has been protestic about 3 months and the goverments dosent move them out of the turistic places.
