ok past few months I been getting spurts of major itching on my tailbone..It lasts 2 or 3 days and goes away. Then returns a month or two later. I take baths daily, so dont say its not from washing. I had my hubby look at it and he says there is nothing there but a little redness from me scratching. Has anyone had this or knows what the heck it can be? I hate to go to the doctor for something so trivial. Thanks a bunch!!!!

I WORK FOR A SURGEON...and it is possible that this itching your describing could be the early start of what is called a PILONIDAL CYST. It is a small tract below the skin surface that becomes clogged/infected and if left untreated can become several inches long and quite deep. It usually requires some type of surgical intervention...but if caught in the very early stages, that would be minimal. Rather than wait til it gets to the "infected" stage, have your PCP(primary care physician) examine the area, and he/she can refer you to a general surgeon for a consultation or treatment. Better to catch it early!!!

pretty sure its some kind of herpes virus. I have had it in various places- same type of virus called different things depending on where it shows up. I get it on my jaw and on my arms at points where there are nerve endings, on my buttocks and now on my tail bone. It s stress related I am certain. In my case, I believe there are certain foods I eat (binge on) that cause this problem. Acycolvir (prescribed medicine) helps if I take it before the outbreak. After the outbreak- cortisol creme seems to help the itchy, but in a closed area of your body, need to be able to let it dry out. This is all my own experience - not a doctor. Was diagnosed with the herpes simplex virus years ago for the jaw thing - all the rest is just observation.
