How many times do you pay the bill for insurance? Once.
How many times do you pay the fine for driving without insurance? As many times as you are caught.
Which potentially would be higher?

That really does not matter does it? And anyway, it would depend, if it were that simple, on how many times you got caught!
The police now have the power to seize a vehicle being driven without insurance - that would cost you AT LEAST £125 to get back the vehicle on the first day - then daily storage costs are added. So add that to the potential fine and it all adds up.
Also remember how much you could be sued for if you drive, uninsured and cause an accident/damage/death or serious injury to someone. Do you have millions of spare pounds to look after the person that you have crippled for life? If you do, then you may as well pay for the insurance!

The answer to that would be irrelevant if you consider the potential cost of having a serious accident while driving uninsured.
The answer 'yes' is only true depending on the magistrate / judge who adjudicates on the day. You might find the cost to be greater or lower than the comparative cost of taking out insurance depending on the circumstances and the day.
In my opinion 3rd Party tax (the minimum statutory requirement) should be included with the car tax. In this way an economy of scale would result in lowering the cost of basic mandatory insurance.

Yes. I got knocked of my motorbike by some **** in bradford a Mr Javid Iqbal if he is reading.!! He was uninsured and wrecked my bike and caused my partner a serious injury to her back. I had to go through the MIB (motor insurance Bureau ) for uninsured losses. Firstly the police were hesitant to get involved till i complained coz he was a Muslim. THey actually had to pay an elder of his community to go round to extract the information from him as to whether he was insured or not because he lied to the police at the time.
Anyhow 3 years on he got a 280 pound fine in the courts and 8 points on his license. I got a wrecked bike although its been paid for now and my partner has a damaged back for life. It phuking stinks. why bother with insurance when the penalties are a joke

Most people who drive without insurance don't think they will *ever* get in an accident (who, me?) but think about the cost if you get in an accident, and a court finds that you were at fault.
How expensive is it then to have no insurance?

i lost my lisence and got a £250 fine. tho this was in my first 2 years of getting my lisence. I thought i was insured on the viechle, well it was my g/f who said she could have any driver drive her car, muggins here did and lost my lisence through it, so i would have to say in my situation say yes, because then you have to start all over again which means MORE MONEY!!!! but then again depends on your age points in the past and things so its not really a question that has 1 answer

Not only can you get a fine you can also have your licence taken away. Think of all the taxi fares etc. Is it still cheaper?

Used to be a consideration- but now they're as likely to seize and crush your car.
Also, it's no bad thing to face up to your responsibilities - if you maimed someone wouldn't you want to make sure they're cared for financially?
Still, that wouldn't happen to you, would it, you're obviously a perfect driver...

But what if you were involved in an accident and somebody died or was seriously injured? What would the cost be then?
