Playing both sides of an issue and not taking a clear stance just to debate.Like he could be argueing a point either way just to see how people respond.

In common parlance, devil's advocate has come to mean a person who takes a position for the sake of argument. This practice is generally an instruction technique, whereby one person more experienced teaches another who is more novice to argue properly, taking in mind a position the latter doesn't know well or at all. This way, the depth of perspective of the arguer-to-be increases.
He (devlsadvoct) is essentially a teacher. We may all learn from him.

A devil's advocate, is one who look over the best laid plans of man, and show, or tries to show what is wrong with them, or how they are wrong!

He is the best of advisers, for if the worst that can happen is taken into account, it my be avoided!

He after all others have spoken, he tries to show its faults. It is a wise king who knows when to hearken, and when to blow him off!

A true devil's Advocate, is one who after the final decision is made, he throws himself into to it to make it work! Weather he is discounted or hearkened to!

It is called that when you take a position you disagree with, but, state the thinking from that position so all sides are represented, and, hopefully the best decision will result.
