Moominboy is pretty much right. Here's some more detail:
Gas molecules in the atmosphere are smaller than any wavelength of visible light, so rather than reflecting/absorbing a specific color of light like a normal solid material would, gas molecules absorb some of the light's energy, at a certain wavelength (or color) and later release the energy at the same wavelength (color). This happens more often with shorter wavelengths (or bluish colors). So in general, blueish colors are the ones being absorbed and scattered by gas molecules.
The light from the sun that doesn't come directly to you only gets to your eye by being reflected or scattered, and in the sky, since the atmosphere is made up primarily of oxygen and nitrogen gas molecules, most of the light you see is the light scattered by these molecules, which is primarily blueish.
Incidentally, this is the same reason that the sun looks yellow, and sunsets loog orange: of the light that does get directly to you from the sun, some of it gets scattered by the atmosphere, and since blue light is the light that gets scattered more often, that leaves a yellowish looking light coming directly from the sun that reaches your eye. As more atmosphere gets in the way (during sunset) more of the blueish and greenish light is scattered, leaving only orange or even red light - the longest wavelengths of visible light - to reach your eye.

Why is this under military? The sky is blue so we could use the word in the Air Force Anthym.
Off we go into the wild blue yonder,
Climbing high into the sun;
Here they come zooming to meet our thunder,
At 'em boys, Give 'er the gun! (Give 'er the gun now!)
Down we dive, spouting our flame from under,
Off with one helluva roar!
We live in fame or go down in flame. Hey!
Nothing'll stop the U.S. Air Force!
Additional verses:
Minds of men fashioned a crate of thunder,
Sent it high into the blue;
Hands of men blasted the world asunder;
How they lived God only knew! (God only knew then!)
Souls of men dreaming of skies to conquer
Gave us wings, ever to soar!
With scouts before And bombers galore. Hey!
Nothing'll stop the U.S. Air Force!

why in military section? anyway, the sky is blue because sunrays passing through oxygen molecules produce the blue part of the spectrum.
