I am looking for someone to let me know how could prophet Muhammed make his living after his migrating to Medina. I know that he was a trader before his marriage and then he married a wealthy woman. My question is about after his marriage. Did he continue working after his marriage? and also after his migrating to Medina? Is it true that after his migration he made his living ONLY from the lootings he got during his wars?

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was the head of state of the Muslims who has collected very small sum of money as salary.

My friend I answered this many times before and it is again one more time. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) only took part in six very small battles and there were no Old Testament kind of looting and burning of cities. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) spared the lives of his worst enemies.

Thank you for this question.

The prophet Muhammad (saw) worked for traders but did not have a business of his own. One of the merchant traders he worked for was Khadija, a woman merchant. After working for her for years, she was so impressed with his honesty and character that she asked him to marry her. He continued to work for her after they married, acting as her agent and going on buying trips for her. It was while they were married that the first revelation came to him (saw).

While at Mecca the meccans instituted an embargo against all the Muslims effectively diminishing all of their wealth to almost nothing. When Muhammad (saw) arrived in Medina he had nothing but the respect of the people who migrated with him. He lived then as the head of the Muslims and the Medinans who accepted him (including some Jews and Christians) and survived on the donations of the people whom he served.

There were no lootings or vast treasury, he (saw) lived a very simple life and was known to help his wives with cooking and cleaning and fixed his own clothing etc.

And Allah knows best.

Peace and Blessings,

Salim

In Mecca, he was a trader, as you mentioned in the question. In Medina, he was the head of the newly-founded moslem state. As such, he was entitled to a salary granted to him from the state treasury.

One-fifths of booty captured from caravans was given to allah's apostle. In addition he had first dibs on the non-Muslim women captured.

Ish :288 “Allah divided the booty stolen from the first caravan after he made spoils permissible. He gave four-fifths to those He had allowed to take it and one-fifth to His Apostle.”

Ish:594 “‘Muhammad, divide the spoil and booty of camels and cattle among us.' They forced the Prophet up against a tree, and his robe was torn from him. Muhammad cried, ‘Give me back my robe. If there had been more sheep I would have given you some. You have not found me to be *********, cowardly or false.”
Tabari 9:26 “He had captured so many sheep and camels they could not be counted.”

It is little wonder Muhammad prayed:
Bukhari:143 “O Allah! I seek refuge with you from distress and sorrow, from helplessness and laziness, from miserliness and cowardice, from being heavily in debt and from being overcome by men.”
