I think of Galileo, Darwin, and Hume who were sort persecuted for their beliefs and discoveries. The Catholic Church ravaged anyone that got in the way of it's doctrines. Come brillant minds never came to the front with their findings because it contradicted some of the beliefs of the bible.

Bush comes to mind when I think of modern hindrances by religious zealots; his stand on stem cell research is not exactly pro-research. Stem cells could be one of the greatest advancements in history if only there were enough scientists and funding behind it. Only the die hard Christians are against it and most don't even understand it. We need to have a separation from Church and State, obviously this hasn't really happened yet.

Yeah i forget about the priest that tried to expel the demons from those that were mentally ill. And when that didn't work, they just burned them.

Hey Guys, it´s good to read your answers.

Here in Europe, sometimes it sounds from the other side of the see, like: The US become fortress of Christianity, against the science.

of course it stands in the way of research . It all comes down to morals and each religion has its own . We could save millions through research and developing drugs and cures for diseases. Just like we already have religion tells us all about miracles that are usually just illusions or magic tricks . I am 29 yrs old and have never witnessed a miracle . Nor will I,

It was scientists who developed the polio vaccine and smallpox vaccine.
I am sure someone will say Oh but we had help cause without god then those scientists could never have lived .

Once again we are talking about Science not religion the two do not work together. We have not proven anything Religious with science. We have actually saved lives and have proof science works .

If I have a choice between a drug for polio I will take it over any religion.
When you can show me a modern miracle where a plague without humans help has been eliminated. totaly wiped out with no one ever catching it again no sign of it at all then maybe i will think a minute about religion but until that happens ,keep it away from my children , their schools, my government, and my work place. I was given my right from religion by one of the greatest men in our history JOHN ADAMS He helped put the 1st amendment in the constution.

" Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion,or prohibiting the free exercise thereof: or abridging the freedom of speech,or of the press:or the right pf the people peacably to assemble, and to petition the Government for redress of grievances.

Agreed completely. Sadly our constitution (even though they mentioned God frequently) does say we are to have seperation of state and Church. Heck, that's one of the reasons we have this country so people could practice their beliefs without persecution. Not so anymore. It's not just Bush.....he's just the pawn. I believe there is a conspiracy at work and has been for many, many years. It's not just the Republicans, but all politicians. The patriot act took away so much of civil liberties, it is terrible. Sadly, most people don't even know what the Patriot Act is and what the heck it did to our Constitution which was our core principles in this country. Personally, I think we need to wipe the slate completely clean in the political arena. It's actually become the family business for many of our politicians......so what happens, more ridiculous ideas and principles are continually passed down from generation to generation. Look what we did to our Native Americans for "Somebody's" sake. They were and are far more civilized than we could ever hope to be. I am glad to know that I have Native American blood coursing throughout my body, but I can't get to it unfortunately so I study as much as possible because maybe their belief systems are the real answers to our mixed up, crazy and insane country right now. Sorry, got on a roll, but fully agree with you. Wish more people would speak up, get involved and do something to stop the farce and the horrible future we are creating for our future generations.

During the Renaissance and for the last 200 years, Christianity has been a major force in Western Civilization. It seems that science has advance greatly during this time frame, so, I do not think your question correlates with the facts.

Also, in reality, anyone with new beliefs that challenge the status quo will get some level of verbal persecution, it is part of human nature to resist change.

If you believe in God, then you believe in the sanctity of human life. Bush is not resisting the advancement of science. He is standing firm on a moral issue.

It is bound to. A scientific mind seeks answers through natural processes and known facts without thinking bout God (so many people think that scientists try to disprove God when really they honestly just aren't thinking about God at all, just looking for answers), whereas a religious mind assumes he has all the answers because his religion told him he does, so anyone searching for answers different from his is seen as heresy. These two positions are directly opposed and are bound to clash.

*Note: Only the radicalists or fundamentalists are usually that way so I'm not generalizing or just being a jackass.

Absolutely. Any person with even a little common sense would think that stem cells is a no brain-er. Why is this even an issue?

If you want to change the current trend in Washington, than we all must get out and vote.

If it weren't for Christianity, Christopher Columbus would have been on his way to set up a mining colony in the Asteroid Belt or such, rather than trying to show that the world isn't flat, and find a shortcut to the Orient.

Think of the millions of lives and billions of dollars wasted in building and servicing churches/synagogues/mosques over the centuries. All in pursuit of various mythical beings.

How far ahead would we be if all that energy was redirected to something useful like science, medicine etc.

I look forward to the day when religious zealots and fundementalist have no power on progress. Religious people just need to take care of themselves and their own souls, and let others who do not believe as they do take care of theirs. What I do is my responsibility and has nothing to do with anyone else, so mind your business where my salvation is concerned.
