Yes of course they are...as is lust...greed...sloth. Thats why the church say's they are bad.

Yes. I believe humans descent from animals and have instincts like they have them as well, this also includes good instincts. However unlike animals we are also very much influenced by our education and we have senses to control our instincts. So no one should excuse his bad deeds by saying this was his natural instinct.
By the way as a non-religious person I don't use the word "sin". I only have a concept of bad deeds which are those that do harm to others.
