I'd like to get your opinion on this:

We were at a sushi bar, and I said nicely to the chef: "Make me something good."

If you were the chef, what do you think that statement means? The first thing that comes to mind..?

I have a reason to ask this, but I don't want to "sway" your answers. Please just answer with whatever the first thing that comes to your mind.

Thanks..

I think that it is asking the chef what he thinks is his best dish. It is also a complement to the chef because it shows you trust his judgement.

Whenever I ask that, I always consider the dish I'm receiving to be either a favorite of the chef's or a popular dish.

If I were a chef, I would make sure it was one of the top dollar menu items, since a business thrives on income. Sounds terribly, but it's true. Also, I would look at which menu items are the most popular and get the most compliments. I would give that to the customer.

If I were a bad chef, I would just give the person who ordered that the most expensive item on the menu, regardless of how it tasted.

I think it means that you are looking for something that you would enjoy eating and since you're not a picky eater that you're leaving it up to the Chef to choose what to make whether it's something he enjoys making or his personal favorite or what people ask for the most. But I think that he was probably offended that you might think some of his other cooking wasn't good.

Of course it means you want some good sushi. But since you specified "good" that could infer that he makes something "bad", and you have choosen between the two. It seems someone always has a way to twist a comment when they are in a bad mood. So that is my stab at what you were hinting at.

In situations like this it pays to be more specific, because in the eyes of chef, everything they make is good.

I would think that maybe you just wanted my opinion on what I made best and wanted to try something new.

Probably either the most expensive meal(for profit, you know), or the most ordered meal.
