Training is the best method. Anti barking collars work well for most dogs, but those too require some training. You have to work with your dog. Obedience classes should help with barking, as well as other potential problems. There are several home methods of training. Like spraying them with a water bottle or water gun every time they do it. Some people swear by ignoring them. They say if you ignore the bad habit, it will stop. Some people scream bloody murder at their dogs and smack em with newspaper etc. I'm not condoning negative reinforcement (yelling, hitting, etc) but some people swear by it. I worked with my dogs by teaching them a "house bark". Whenever I could get them to bark quietly I praised them, gave them treats, and said "house bark". Now they house bark on command and start barking softly when visitors come to the house. I also have a loud bark command "talk to me". It's very rare that trained dogs bark aggressively and loudly.

Did you know that there are several kinds of dog barks? There are barks that say, "someone I don't know is near." There are others that say, "I'm glad to see you." And others that say, "you're not spending enough time with me." This is just a very short list. Instead of coming out of the gate with "how do I stop my dog from barking," perhaps you should do a little research to see why (s)he is barking in the first place. Then, you may have a better idea as to how to know when and why you should actually listen. Someday, it may save your possessions if not your life.

I own a dog walking and sitting company with over 200 dogs we service daily.
You do not need a shock collar. You do not need a choke chain or any infliction of pain on the dog.
Dogs bark to get attention; whether alerting owners of someone outside, in play, to go outside, in dislike, in warning, out of boredom, and in many other situations.
You can clap and say 'no' or whatever keyword your family uses to your pup as a negative response, but that does not fix the over-all problem. If your dog is barking at anything outside, you need to show them that there is no need to bark. Let them explore the reason why they barked. If their barking at another dog, make sure the other dog is friendly, and let them sniff each other.
You need to desensitize them to the reason why they're barking. Barks at the mailman? Get them to meet the mailman and get used to him/her.
Our waste removal employees have dogs bark at them every week when the yards are serviced. Once the employee gets to know the dog (employee can hand the dog treats each week until the dog stops barking... or employee will just let the dog sniff until the dog is okay w/the employee.)
Desensitize the dog to the reason it barks. Take control by having a calm assertiveness(not aggressiveness) towards the dog.
When it barks, correct it verbally. (Yelling is not assertive, yelling is seen as unstability by dogs and the dog will either retract in fear of the unstable master or will keep barking. This doesn't fix the problem in the long-term.)
Whenever you see the dog get excited and about to bark, verbally correct it.
This will recondition the dog-long-term for the best rehabilitation.

Tune in to your dog. It could be trying to tell you something. Barking for a dog is parallel to speaking for humans. One kind of bark could simply be to express joy. Another might be for attention or affection. Another to warn you of the approach of someone or something. If you learn to listen appropriately, the issue stops being how to get it to stop.
On the other hand, if your dog is a Chihuahua and just barks for the sake of barking, trade it in for a more intelligent canine.
By the way, the person that recommended chocolate knows that dogs cannot process chocolate and will easily contract a fatal form of diabetes from it.

The one thing you mustn't do is shout at them. If you shout all they hear is the noise and they become more excited and bark more. If it is just a nuisance bark for the sake of it or at another dog try talking firmly but in a nice tone and when the dog stops barking reward it with a treat. This will take time and patience but it will work.

If its your dog, then buy a bark "shock" collar. Dogs have hide, not skin, so it will jolt them & wake them up a bit and they will very quickly associate the shock (which they will avoid) with the barking. Only keep the collar on when you are present at first, so you know everything is alright with them. If its a nieghbor dog, then call the police (non-emergency number and complain) everytime you hear the dog bark.

I did this: When my dachshund continually barked, every time she did, I would say "no barking." Over and over I did that. She learned that it was not in my favor for her to bark. Some dogs just bark. You might try using a water gun when they bark. Sometimes I am glad my dog barks, because it is a warning.

We tend to think of dog training as a series of steps for teaching particular behaviors. To teach a dog to stay in a particular position, you reward her as she remains in place for gradually longer times, at gradually greater distances, with gradually increasing degrees of distraction. Now, this is fine, training does involve teaching dogs specific behaviors with a step-by-step approach. This week, though, I’m going to discuss three mental habits that will not only enable you train more effectively but also make life pleasant for both you and your dog.
