To many many people in this world, these are far more than superstitions. Especially for people who have been raised from childhood in a faith, it can be inextricably woven into their very being. For those people, the best way to help, in my opinion is to help them see the dynamic nature of God's revelation of Himself in the world. Then they can see the logic of reading the bible with "fresh" eyes for the wisdom intended for this generation. To go from belief to no belief at all is implausible. There is "wiggle" room for generous and loving interpretations in holy texts. Literature need not be read as a 3rd grader reads...neither must it be understood through someone else's more educated viewpoint. It can be read with intelligence and heart and one's own deep wisdom can be trusted. This is an avenue of appeal that may bear fruit in helping these good people who are stuck. They are not trying by the way, to be irresponsible or to shift blame. They are trying to live as best as they know how. It hurts them (and all of us really) to put people down who are doing the best that they know to do. Compassion is better.
