Anemia (iron deficiency anemia) most often affects women and not men. That is because men don't bleed every month and they usually are not dieting as often as women! Iron deficiency anemia is the result of decreased intake of iron combined with chronic blood loss. In the older population, the incidence of anemia is often related to liver problems and alcohol intake. Rather than this being iron deficiency anemia this is a folate deficiency.
Other causes of anemia are genetic: sickle cell anemia and thallasemias.

It depends on what type of anemia you have.
There is:
1. iron deficiency- the most common type, can usually be cured by taking iron supplements.

2. hemolytic (thalassemia)-which can be inherited, produced from antibodies from light infections, or heavy use of medications which can destroy red blood cells. This can be cured by removing drug that is causing it.
The heritary type can be controlled but not cured.
3. folic acid definciency anemia- which can be cured with adequate folic acid.
4. Pernicious anemia- caused by lack of Vitamin B-12. This is common among vegetarians, because they get Vitamin B-12 deficiency by not eating red meat.
This can be controlled by getting Vitamin B-12 shots.
5. Aplastic anemia-the most serious, is caused from poor bone marrow function. There is a reduction in white cell production. This can also be caused from taking immunosuppressive drugs, anticancer drugs. Sometimes they are not sure what causes it. If cause can be identified it can be cured, but if not can be fatal.

anemia is caused by two things loss of large amounts of blood and lack of iron in the blood. check with your doctor to find out the cause first before trying iron pills.

You could be run down because of your diet. Also as someone has noted, this could be due to a lack of Iron. You need Iron, and the GP can precribe a course of Iron Tablets, but the main thing is you may have to eat meat, or more meat, if it is not included in your diet. If you are a vegitarian, then I would ask your GP or local chemist who will tell you what is a good replacement for meat.

The main cause of anaemia is a lack of iron or vitamins which are needed for the body to produce haemoglobin in the blood,There can be other causes,so if think you have anaemia it is important that you see your doctor.

Red blood cells contain hemoglobin — a red, iron-rich protein that gives blood its red color. Hemoglobin enables red blood cells to carry oxygen from your lungs to all parts of your body, and to carry carbon dioxide from other parts of the body to the lungs so that it can be exhaled.

Most blood cells, including red blood cells, are produced regularly in your bone marrow — a red, spongy material found within the cavities of many of your large bones. To produce hemoglobin and red blood cells, your body needs iron and vitamins from the foods you eat.

Anemia is a state in which the number of red blood cells or the hemoglobin in them is below normal. When you're anemic, your body produces too few healthy red blood cells, loses too many of them or destroys them faster than they can be replaced. As a result, your blood is low on red blood cells to carry oxygen to your tissues — leaving you tired.

The main symptom of most types of anemia is tiredness. Other signs and symptoms of anemia include:

Weakness
Pale skin
A fast heartbeat
Shortness of breath
Chest pain
Dizziness
Cognitive problems
Numbness or coldness in your extremities
Headache

there are multiple causes. the most common is malnutrition...meaning u r eating less food that provide the essential vitamins in building a healthy red cells. other reasons r blood loss either thru cuts, heavy menses, accidents, etc. there r also cause by major destruction of blood cells in ur body, and also chronic diseases. u should go for a thorough medical check up with ur practitioner.
