Sausage will probably harm the ducks. They seem to like bread, so that is what they get. Also, if yhou are eating a sandwich and have the crust left, it won't go to waste throwing it to a duck. I don't know who started the "trend" but I consider it common sense. I hope I helped.

Who started the trend for throwing bread?
Hmm...Maybe a person didn't like their sandwhich ripped it and tossed it into the water, and the ducks ate it. Then children though the person was feeding the ducks and copied.

In OUR house - it was the only thing we ever had enough of to spare for taking 'little one' out to 'feed the ducks'.
Though sometimes it WAS buns - (stale ones, chopped up).
Now, however, we are told we shouldn't feed bread to any birds as they can't 'metabolise the nutrients' contained within and, once mixed with water, can cause the birds distress or even death!
What a crock! So are we now supposed to feel guilty about taking our kids out to do something that is integral to being a kid???

Farmers started this, as many in the far days gone by, realized that both chickens and ducks are scavengers. Left over food would get thrown out of the house to the pigs and the ducks and chickens would be found grabbing their favorite goodies from the pigs, or waste piles. They also eat grits and just about anything else you toss them, ducks are a bit pickier, but love macaroni and spaghetti as well.

Ducks all over the planet like bread.
They like it when people give them free bread.
That is the main reason.. and also.. if you throw something likes sausages or some other heavier than water object, it sinks whereas bread floats.

We throw bread to ducks because it is easier than throwing the ducks to the bread.

Bread is bad for the digestive system. You want to feed the ducks? No problems, buy some seed and be responsible about caring for the wild.

When we were little and poor, we would go to the park and through our stale bread to the ducks. Free fun and more room in the garbage can I guess.

Bread is cheap and available, it floats for the ducks, and then sinks for the fish. If it is thrown back, as someone suggests, you can always DUCK.

I think it has to do with the fact that bread floats on water. thus it's easier for the ducks to eat
