I don't think so.
For one thing, although the models are really cute and some fashion shows are interesting for a couple of minutes, they aren't all that much fun to watch.
The second thing is, hardly any of the clothes modelled are practical or easy to wear, even if you are slim enough. They are more like a work of strange art, and displayed as such.
Thirdly, no-one can afford them anyway, so why should we care?
The fashion industry is the latest scapegoat, but if you conduct a poll, not about the question you have asked above, but something along the lines of "How many fashion shows do you watch a month? What outfits or designs have impressed you most recently? Would you buy them? Where would you wear them?" it would be interesting to see what answers you got. If any!
My point is, although lots of people like a fleeting glance at those shows, not very many of them devote their time to seriously watching, unless they are in the fashion industry themselves.
It used to be that girly-nudey magazines for men such as Playboy and Penthouse were held responsible for poor body image in the average female.
I find that more of a threat to my self image still; because those models who have nothing to wear, are portrayed as a way to titillate men. They are used as a sexual tool.
The models on the catwalk are only used to show off the clothes. It is their job to look like that. I think they look great, and I love the way they walk. But I know the witch hunt is now directed at them.
Look at the classic works of art - lets take all the nude or semi-nude depictions of Venus, for example. Surely the artist chose a model he imagined worthy of his own image of beauty and grace, and one that fit the stereotype of the times? These days, they are kind of laughable; those big round bellies and no muscle tone, etc. Were they a threat to a woman's body image back then? Probably not. Certainly not now.
What was considered beautiful fifty, forty, thirty, or ten years ago is constantly being replaced with another body-type. I don't think the models were ever taken seriously; if so, why not include ballerinas in the witch-hunt? They are also graceful and slender and move beautifully. The world is watching the Amazons right now; the Angelina Jolie body-type is the one in vogue. Also very nice. But why should any woman worry? If you want to become a celebrity, well it might be a thing to worry about. But if you just want to live a happy life, make the most of the body you have. That will leave no room for negativity and low self-esteem.

Yes i do think it can affect the way we feel because, who out there as not bought something that's too small and say I'm going to loose weight to fit into it and most of the time we never do and it hangs there for years taunting us these industries display these images to us with super slim models and we as humans always want perfection and what we are not or cant have, im so glad that it is now banned that super skinny models are not to be used on catwalks as they do not portray the majority of the populations size which i believe to be a size 14

The only people we can blame are ourselves.
It is a similar question I have asked myself often.
Why oh why oh why did I buy that piece of so called fashion...because I look at it now and and it is hideous.
I feel because people are losing the basic instinct to think for themselves..(or we are becoming too lazy to think for ourselves and be creative)..that we more and more depend on people or institutions to tell us what we can and cant do,then follows the sheep syndrome.
Many people wear and use fashion to be accepted..if only they could see that being individual and wearing what they want to wear as opposed to what is reffered to as fashion then they would be able to express themselves as individuals with their own identity and their own personal body image.

One of the first rules of setting good Spiritual priorities, boundaries and goals (short term and long term) are to stop blaming and stop complaining. Learn to be happy with yourself and who you are. All people have wonderful Creator given gifts, our job is to find those and work on them not blame or complain about nonsensical and meaningless things. Why waste your energy on such things. We have been blessed with tremendous energy and it's our job to learn to use it in the right way and in a very positive and productive way. I know you may not like what I said, but I am a truthful person and only wish to be of real help to others. Good luck and I hope and pray you realize someday how unimportant that question really is. Good Luck and maintain a positive attitude and everything else will come together for you.

Yes and no. Dont forget society has been drilled of this image of skinny, big breasted women from tv shows, magazines etc. There are more then them to blame. I hate to watch the fashion shows on tv or pickup a magazine anymore, these girls need to eat.

No , Everyone has a responsibility for their own Lives , if the Idiots Destroy their own bodies by stupid Dieting and Abuse that is their own fault , the same wwith the Idiots who fall for the use of Cocaine "For Recreational Use" because their "Friends" do it and they don,t want to be "Left Out" until it,s too late ,as in every other aspect of Life , the Responsiblity is YOURS and YOURS ALONE

No. Rather than blaming, choose accepting. Yes, many young females have terrible body image problems. Go from there.

Yeah, I think so. And not just for girls. Everyone always thinks of how it affects young girls, but it also affects young men.
Girls are always striving to be "that" thin and guys also strive towards "the masculine image"
It is a very dangerous trap for many people.

I believe it does have some to do with it. Also, people at school, work, friends etc...do to in my opinion. No matter how small you are, there always seems to be someone smaller then you. Good Luck with the essay!
