Don't even bother to look unless you are prepared to spend big for that rental. Even non-villa dumps are pricey rentals. Any worthy of the word villa are going to be major rental costs.
Pick an area that you want and ask for the phone number of a name-brand Realtor in that area. They would be delighted to arrange for a rental. Up front payment of first month, last month, security deposit, month-rent to Realtor are standard.
My son rented a nice house in the Hollywood hills and found the biggest problem was getting back a security deposit from a sneaky landlord no matter how immaculate the property was when he left (so there may be other unexpected costs).

www.vrbo.com or www.vrbo.net. Vacation rentals by Owners. They are cheaper and easy! Rent directly from the owner, makes sense. Cut out the middle man and save $$

Depends on what price range you are looking for. Good luck on something affordable.

go to craigslist.com and then under Los Angeles. It won't be that cheap, but you never know what you might find.
