I have used Norton, McAfee and several others through the years. The best I've found is free, it's Avast. They update their virus data base on an almost daily basis, something the others don't do.
I have been using this for 4 years now and have yet to get a virus. You can download it at: Avast.com. When the page comes up click on the download tab at the top of the page. From there select : Avast 4 home edition free download.

I recommend Bit Defender for personal or small business use.

I recently switched about 60 personal and company computers from Mcafee, because mcafee has a lot of major problems, and it really slows down your computer, especially the new 06 version.

Bit defender takes about 15 minutes to scan a 100GB+ hard drive. Mcafee can easily take 2 or more hours. Mcafee will slow down your computer noticably. It has numerous bugs and there are error screens that force you to restart your computer (Doesn't allow you to ignore or continue). Mcafee can rarely fully clean Pup's or viruses.

I cant recommend Mcafee for any use. They have a popular name because they offer free licenses to a lot of new PC owners through the manufacturers, but their product has severe flaws.

Here is a great review / comparison of the most popular anti-virus software. Stay away from Mcafee.

AVG Free Edition gives the most bang for the buck (it's free, and it works great!).

Norton & McAfee used to be the best, now they're just overpriced and a hassle.

Trend-Micro's online housecall over the Internet is nice, their Pc-Cillin is pretty good.

Nod32 Anti-Virus is the best, fastest commerical Anti-Virus software right now.

well if you want the best then you will be looking a commercial contract. Sophos as are pretty good.

If you want a effective home solution then I use Norton and have never had any problems. Avg is a good free alternative.

the best FREE one and very popular is AVG Free by Grisoft. Another good free one is AVAST. Never have 2 antivirus programs since they could conflict with each other and give false positiives...
