The US have served under the UN in Korea & presently Afghanistan along with other NATO troops. NATO headquarted in Brussels was not formed by any one country but as an alliance among the member states. Presently NATO troops in Afghanistan come under a British commander. The OIC of NATO forces rotates

We are the biggest member of NATO, commanders rotate. We are just one more member of the UN plus we have a permanent seat in the security council of the UN, but that does not guarantee who is going to be running a specific UN mission.

I served in Germany 93-97 and we were considered NATO troops. Well, not my unit, we were a forward detachment to a CONUS unit, but everyone else stationed over there was part of NATO. Still, when the whole balkan mess started some enlisted started rebelling and refusing to wear the blue berets and helmets of the UN mission. At least one of those guys was a very high profile case, he was not a hippie or a coward, he simply refused to serve under UN command.

Yes, we do serve at least under NATO command, I'm not sure about UN.

I am a U.S. military vet (99-05) and I served at a NATO base in the Netherlands all of 03 and 04.

The base was called RHQ AFNORTH, but has since changed its name to JFC Brunssum (Joint Forces Command Brunssum).

I'll tell you one thing, U.S. troops do NOT like serving under the command of a foreign military.

So far, Coalition forces are led by US contingents, and that's how it should be.. US forces should never be under the command of anybody but American leaders.
NATO, ie, North Atlantic Treaty Organization was formed by the US to help protect the northern frontiers between us and the Russians.. And, of course, the US bears the brunt of manning the forces..
