Thailand is a beautiful place where the local are some of the most friendly people you will ever come across.
Lots to do in bangkok - from visiting temples to the sex shows. from having great resturant food to eating roaches on the street side. Its an adventure just being there.
An advice for the first timer there - try everything. Some people will tell you to give the sex shows a miss, I say do it esp if you are only going there once. Experience everything you can.
Top of the list - Visit at least 1 or 2 temples; they are really beautiful and you probably have not been to thailand without stepping in one.
Visit the palace (good to go with a guide). The floating market should not be missed as well as one of the culture shows. You should take one of the day tours that covers all three (the culture show is usually in Rose Garden when you can see some thai boxing, thai wedding, elephants at work etc) these tours can be booked at most hotels.
Try to spend at least one weekend there and visit the Weekend market - JJ Market or Ja-ju-chat Market. There you can find lots of gifts etc remember to bargain.
Shopping is another must do in Thailand and I would recommend MBK or Ma-Boon-kong Shopping Complex. There you can get anything under the sun - Video games, DVD, Clothes. Bags. shoes. all at bargain prices.
Visit a massage place and get really good thai massage at real cheap prices.
At night do visit one of the go go bars - either at Soi Cowboy or Na Na Plaza. Do try some street food as well; those are the best food around and cheap as well. Just remember that water is best taken in bottle form.
DO NOT buy diamonds or other gems from street side vendors no matter how real they look - they would even do different test for you as well like cutting glass and trying to smash them with a hammer ... they are just glass and a good trick.

Hi - I read some of the responses to your last question as well.. and you are getting some ridiculous advice along with some good advice - - Monks are not overly sensitive, they are just not permitted to touch women in any way.. so don't touch them.. oh, ok, - - I think you will have fun just walking the streets, looking around.. feel free to go into the temples, take off your shoes first, wear respectable clothing.. Thai people are very friendly and will forgive any minor cultural gaffs, so, don't worry, just be polite as you might be anywhere.. Thais love a smile, especially when meeting.. smile alot.. As you might in any big city, be careful of street hustlers and hawkers, but realize that here, it is just a job..
I never had shots etc.. but up to you.. you will find it quite technologically advanced in some ways and quite a bargain if you know where to go.. there will be travel agents and hotel lobby sales people offerig tours etc.. these might be fun..
As for beach - if you want something close to Bkk, go to Cha'am or Hua hin - Pattaya is quite a bar scene..
Enjoy !! and relax..

MUST SEE is the weekend market in Bangkok. It's extremely convenient to get to. The elevated subway will take you there. It is the terminal stop called Morchit on the SkyTrain line. It is unlike anything you've experienced. It is literally an open space with a mile's worth of shops selling everything from clothing, furniture, jewelry, cd's, rabbits. It gets quite hectic so dress comfortably in t-shirts and shorts. You can find EVERY souvenir you need for your family and friends.
MUST DO is to take one of dozens of 1 day tours being offered on Kaosan Road or any hotel or hostel you stay at. Most of these tours will take you to the Bridge on the River Kwai, to Thailand's floating market and one of their temples.
DONT DO the sex shows unless you're keen on seeing women popping ping pong balls out of their privates.

You are probably worried about the coup - but don't be. Its great for Thailand. Here's a letter from a friend there
'When my wife finally stopped singing and dancing around with our son at 7.45am this morning, she shouted out "Damn good!"
a) few people outside Thailand really know how Taksin has so cleverly usurped, benefitted from financial corruption instead of tackling it, bought up enormous tracts of his own country in areas of future development, bought foreign homes while barring foreigners from doing the same here, sued every major media outlet that criticised him and done NOTHING for the poor, and especially the hilltribes. Smiled at foreigners while restricting visas even further and pursuing policies which may ultimately be seen to be xenophobic. Full of promises and no delivery. Even his home city Chiangmai has waited a year in vain for his promised 53m baht to tackle flooding.
b) yes, he was democratically elected. The second time. Like another western premier we could name. At the first one he bought his way in with the "million baht per village" offer. That turned out to be a loan, not a gift of course, but it did the trick. Literally!
c) In my personal view this bloodless coup would not have taken place so smoothly, if at all, without the tacit consent of His Majesty. Maybe the writing was on the wall days ago? It is reported that Taksin took his whole family to the UN conference - unprecedented.
d) Dancing in the streets? Well there should be wherever thinking people are to be found (ie mainly in Bangkok). What we have in the streets here are lots of armoured personnel carriers and soldiers with rifles slung, looking a little bored and confused. But they don't mind having their photos taken as I proved on the way into the office this morning. Not allowed to talk, though, and many don't know what is happening.
e) Next? One of many responsible comments by General Sonthi was that the army would not hang on to power for very long. A coalition government, maybe with the promising young Democrat Abhisit to the fore, could be great!
f) We live in quite exciting times, but feel totally safe and very curious about the spin-off effects. Prayerfully this can only be good for Thailand!'

I lived in Thailand for ten years. Its a very safe and beautiful country with wonderfully friendly people.
I don't know how long you have there, but there are two basic destinations.
Don't spend much time in Bangkok, but go south for the beaches and islands, ot north for the mountains and old culture. You'll love Chiang Mai.
Mail me if you want detailed info, and let me have your e-mail address because there's never enough space in Answers for replies (1500 characters only - about 300 words.).
There's lots to tell you,. and its all good.
You don't need any shots. The health care there is second to none

Watch the news. There is a hostile takeover going on there. It is going on in Bannock. Consider going somewhere else. There are bombs going on and martial law has taken over. I seriously doubt that it will be fun. I am worried about some people who are stuck over there.

eat bugs!
seriously, try the Isan (northeastern) fried and spiced insects. go ahead, try 'em! you can find them in bangkok - esp. near the red-light areas (most of the bargirls are from Isan and they like them).
it's just one of those things you ought to do so you can tell the story to shocked friends later!
... and the bugs aren't as bad as they first appear.
