When someone is too stubborn to take pills, go to a shrink or read self help books...what can one do to help them overcome bipolar illness?

I am bipolar, but I take the pills, go to my psychiatrist, and read self-help books. In one of the self-help books, it mentions what a family member or friend can do if the person refuses treatment. If you are close to this person and your relationship is having problems due to his/her illness, then the only thing you can do (when they are refusing treatment) is to protect yourself. The book says to tell them that their illness is making your life difficult and if they don't do something to make their illness better, you will need to separate yourself from them. Hopefully this will help them to realize how important it is to seek treatment and help for their illness. It may also help to have information about bipolar laying around where they can access it. Hope this helps. Good luck!

Bipolar is not something you get over it's an illness, based mostly on highs and lows. This person needs professional help with bi-polar it's very serious, has this person been diagnosed or do you think that's what this person has.
Bipolar is extreme, extreme highs, extreme lows, when they think they can do anything and often spend to much money or take risks that can hurt them. When the lows come they hit hard and the person can becom suicidal so get this person help. Also contact a crisis reponse number and get information from them. It's a serious disease. I had a friend that would drive five hours to buy clothes, and spend unbelievable amounts of money. And when she was down she wouldn't leave her home. It also ran in her family her brother and mother also had it. It's serious contact anyone in the Mental Health Services sector maybe they will have ideas for you, so you can help your friend.

Curiosa, Hi, I speak from experience. There is nothing you can do. Bi-polar condition is a chemical imbalance in the brain. Unless it is adjusted with the right balance of medication, the person will continue to behave in an erratic and often self-destructive way. You need to decide if you can live with that. I had to draw a line in the sand. I hope it doesn't come to that for you, but if it does, remember you can not save this person from themselves if they refuse any reasonable help.

Well my dear, I work with mental illness and I am sorry to tell you that there is nothing that you can, only the person themselves can do something for themselves. I hope that this person will come to realize that they can feel better if only they would except the help that can be offered. Good on you for having these concerns for your friend.

You cant. They are going to feel tortured till they decide that meds are the way to go. They will be miserable and make everyone around them miserable, till they see for themselves.

(Experienced with being bipolar)

Nothing. You can't help someone who doesn't want to help themselves.
