From Russia, it never leaves Russia and goes from Moscow to Vladivostok.
Perhaps you mean the Trans-Mongolian line? This goes from Russia to China via Mongolia using part of the Trans Siberial route.

Russia.
You can take a direct train from Moscow over the Trans-Siberian.
The lines split, so you can go via Mongolia to Beijing, or over the longer route to Vladivostok.
Incidentally, as the Russia (and Mongolian and Finnish) railways use a wider gauge (1524mm) than China (1435mm), the carriage bogies have to be changed at the border. When I last did the journey, this operation was performed with the passengers still on board. It is quite fascinating to watch.

There are in effect three branch lines to the Trans Siberian. The branch that tranverses the entirety of Siberia is the Trans SIberian that runs Moscow to Vladivostock (both in Russia). The other branch, the Trans Mongolian, runs through Mongolia between Moscow in Russia and Beijing in China. The third branch, whose name I can't remember, runs between Moscow and Beijing but does not run through Mongolia.
