That's a great question. I'll be interested to see how the fundamentalist/literalist crowd will answer this one. Ascension into heaven made sense in the 1st century because, as I'm sure you are aware, heaven existed just above the sky (which was a hard dome that held back the waters that are in heaven). The dome would have rolled back for Jesus to pass through. I'm not sure what the worldview was at the time of Muhammed, but I would assume it wasn't much different.

If Jesus did indeed ascend into the sky, and assuming that he traveled at the speed of light (although it is impossible for a macro body to travel at the speed of light, God can do anything, right) he still would not have reached the end of our own galaxy, much less the edge of the universe. Perhaps this is why he hasn't come back to earth yet - he is still rocketing through outerspace. Nice question.

Both Muhammad and Jesus did not ascend to heaven alive. Both of them died just like all other humans.

I think people of the time must have thought heaven was in the sky. Now we have better scientific understanding this ascent is described either in poetic terms or pseudo scientifc terms such as entering another dimension.

In many religions, heaven has traditionally been regarded as sky-ward. The term "heaven" itself refers to the sky (e.g. "the starry heavens above").
